A study in the July 9 online issue of “The Guardian“ US edition states that more than 80% of urine samples drawn from children and adults in a US health study contained a weed killing chemical linked to cancer.
That chemical is glyphosate and more than 200 million pounds of it are used annually on US fields that provide us with our food, including baby food.
Monsanto and Bayer (the company that bought Monsanto in 2018) maintain that glyphosate is safe. They also maintain that Roundup residue in our food and in our urine is just fine.
The World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen in 2015.
Academics assert that a large percentage of the US population is exposed to glyphosate, but said it is still unclear how that translates to human health.
Meanwhile, a report in “The New Lede,” published July 12 shares that a federal appeals court has rejected a bid by Monsanto owner Bayer AG to head off claims brought by cancer victims alleging that Monsanto failed to warn them of the risks of Roundup.
According to another July 12th story in “The New Lede,” Bayer has been attempting to settle the Roundup litigation, earmarking more than $11 billion for settlements, but while several firms have accepted settlements for their clients, many others have not and continue to press for trials.
Eleven billion dollars is a lot to earmark for anticipated settlements over an allegedly safe product, don’t you think?
